Catholic Schools Week 29Jan – Feb 4

‘Catholic Schools: Christ’s living body active in our world.’

Bord Bainistíochta na Scoileanna

This week we pay tribute to the work of our Catholic Schools in promoting the educational, personal, moral, physical and spiritual development of our young people. At the launch of Catholic Schools Week 2012 in Dundalk last Thursday, Sean Cardinal Brady paid tribute to the 26,600 Board of Management members who manage Catholic Primary Schools in the Republic of Ireland.

He said, “They are members of the local community, they are volunteers. They offer their wisdom and life experience out of loyalty to the local community and out of their keen appreciation of the importance of a good school, for the sake of the pupils and of the community. [...] These boards are exemplary models of subsidiarity at work in our parishes – they are expressions of local participative democracy in our educational system of which we should all be proud.“

The 1st of December 2011 saw the outgoing Boards of Management complete their term and new Boards of Management begin their 4-year term managing our 6 parish primary schools. We thank the outgoing board members for their hard work and wish the incoming Boards every blessing in their work:

Candlemas Day 2nd February

(Feast of the Presentation)

On this day we celebrate the Presentation of the Child Jesus in the Temple. Obedient to the Law of Moses, Mary & Joseph bring the child Jesus to the temple in Jerusalem to be consecrated to the Lord. Whilst there, the devout and just man Simeon recognises Jesus as the Messiah. He had received the promise of the Lord that he would not die without seeing the Lord’s anointed one. His prophesy on seeing Christ is called the Nunc Dimittis and is part of the official Night Prayer of the Church prayed by priests, religious and many lay people:

At last, all-powerful Master, you give leave to your servant * to go in peace, according to your promise.

For my eyes have seen your salvation *

which you have prepared for all nations,

the light to enlighten the Gentiles *

and give glory to Israel, your people. - Luke 2:29-32

Candles are blessed on this day in honour of Christ, the light of all nations.

Blessing of Throats – St Blaise 3rd February

St Blaise, medical doctor and Bishop of Sebaste in modern-day Turkey was martyred in 316AD. According to the stories of his life, he miraculously cured a young boy who was choking on a fishbone. On this day, at Mass throats are blessed with crossed candles in his memory.

Ár gcóineartú / Confirmation 2012
Dear Candidates & Families,
We are now only a couple of months from Lá an Easpaig when our candidates for Confirmation receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit is Christ’s own gift to help us be His followers and witnesses in the world.
In this Sunday’s Gospel, we hear how Jesus called the brothers Simon Peter and Andrew, and James and John, to be His followers. He called them as pairs and made them part of the group of 12 Apostles who would be His special companions and co-workers. We read elsewhere that when He sent them out preaching and healing, he sent them in pairs so that they would be of support to each other.
Each candidate for Confirmation will have a supporter or sponsor to help them be followers of Jesus Christ. This person will stand with them on the day of confirmation when they receive the sacrament from the Bishop. He or she will also have the responsibility of helping them to follow Jesus Christ and make the best use of your gifts and talents as you grow up.
Your sponsor must be a Catholic who has also been confirmed, is at least 16 years old and who practises their faith. What kind of person would make a good sponsor? You’re looking for someone whose faith you admire, whom you can trust and who will pray for you and help you to know Jesus Christ better.
Temperance Sunday & the Pledge
Our next special Mass for Confirmation preparation will be on Sunday 18th February when we celebrate Temperance Sunday. On this day in the Diocese of Kerry candidates for Confirmation are offered the chance to take the ‘Pledge’ – a special promise to not take alcoholic drink until they are 18 and to abstain from drugs for life. This is a very special and serious promise to God and something which should be seriously discussed with parents. A letter about the pledge will be sent to all families through their schools in the near future.
To do at home
Discuss the choice of a Confirmation Sponsor with your parents.
Choose a sponsor who will stand with you for confirmation and who will help you to learn more about being a disciple of Jesus Christ as you grow up.
Discuss the dangers of under-age drinking and taking drugs with your parents and whether you will be taking the Pledge at our next Confirmation preparation Mass.
Return the pledge form completed by your parents to your teacher before Wednesday, 15th February.
Confirmation date: Tuesday March 20th at 3.30pm.
Fr. Seamus O’Connell on the Gospel of Mark
Re-discovering Mark’s Gospel as a Story of Hope led by Fr. Séamus O’Connell on Fri. Feb. 3rd, 7.30 pm-9.15 pm and Sat. Feb 4th, 10 am – 1 pm in John Paul II Pastoral Centre, Rock Rd., Killarney. He is Professor of Sacred Scripture in St. Patrick’s College, Maynooth. Please bring a Bible or the Gospel of Mark. Cost €10. Prior registration is essential. Booking Forms on www.dioceseofkerry.ie or phone 064 66632644.
Our Parish on the Internet
Our internet video stream Sruthlú Naomh Mhuire can be found at http://naomhmuire.wordpress.com/video
Parish website http://naomhmuire.wordpress.com
Seachtain na Scoileanna Caitliceacha 2012
Catholic Schools Week 29 Jan – Feb 4
The theme for Catholic Schools Week 2012 is ‘Catholic Schools: Christ’s living body active in our world.’
Children’s Machnamh on Grandparents
‘Grandparents are a lady and a man who have no little children of their own. They like other people’s.’
‘A grandfather is a man, and a grandmother is a lady!’
‘Grandparents don’t have to do anything except be there when we come to see them. They are so old they shouldn’t play hard or run. It is good if they drive us to the shops and give us money.’
‘When they take us for walks, they slow down past things like pretty leaves and caterpillars.’
‘They show us and talk to us about the colours of the flowers and also why we shouldn’t step on ‘cracks’.’
‘They don’t say, ‘Hurry up.’’
‘Grandparents have to be smart. Chuala Peadar glaoch Íosa ar dtús ar bheola a dhearthár. “Tá an Slánaitheoir casta linn,” a dúirt sé, agus thug go dtí Íosa é. Bhí Francach, André Froissard, ainchreidmheach críochnaithe, ag gabháil leis i lár chathair Pháras. Labhair an Tiarna leis. Scríobh sé leabhar dar teideal: Tá Dia ann – Casadh orm é.

Inniu, chimid Íosa ina ógfhear. Tá na baile fágtha aige. Tá sé ar oilithreacht go dtí an Iordáin mar a bhfuil an fáidh, Eoin Baiste, ag craobhscaoileadh Aithrí san peacaí agus Baisteadh in uisce na Iordáine.

Lá mar atá inniu ann, cuimhnímid go buíoch ar ár mbaisteadh féin. Chuala muid an Soiscéal. Is é ár ndála féin é! Bheannaigh Íosa uiscí an domhain. Shéid gaoth an Spioraid os ár gcionn. D’fhógair an tAthair as na Flaithis: “Is é seo mo mhac muirneach.” “Is í seo m’iníon ionúin.”

We pray for Archbishop Charles Brown who was ordained Archbishop of Aquileia by Pope Benedict XVI on the Feast of the Epiphany in St Peter’s Basilica. Archbishop Brown was nominated Papal Nuncio to Ireland in November and will shortly be taking up his duties as the Pope’s representative to the Irish Church and to the Irish State. Of Irish-American stock, Archbishop Brown was ordained a priest of the Archdiocese of New York in 1989, and following time spent in parish ministry in the Bronx, has worked in Rome since 1994. We ask the Lord to bless his ministry among us during these challenging times.

Churchgate Collections

Dingle Parish Pastoral Council reminds all holders of Garda permits for Churchgate Collections to please carefully observe the law involved and note that there are 21 conditions attached to all Garda permits. While the community spirit and selfless generosity of all volunteers is to be lauded, it is advised that they retain a copy or photocopy of the actual permit. On no account should such collections be taken up within church buildings. Therefore, as all Churchgate collections must enjoy Garda clearance, it is essential that State law be respected and observed at all times.

Mother of God January 1st.

There has been opposition to Mary in every age. The heresies in her regard that were corrected through Councils or Dogmas were in fact errors concerning our redemption in Christ more than heresies against Mary. If we don’t have Mary’s place in the plan of Redemption right, then our concept of who Christ is and what he did is inadequate or false. Irish traditional devotion to Mary has suffered neither from excess nor defect. This is greatly due to the solid teaching of St. Patrick who came among us the year after the great Council of Ephesus, 431AD when the divine Motherhood of Mary was proclaimed. That Council proclaimed (against the Nestorian heresy) that Mary was the Mother of God. Therefore for Christ to be called her Son was to proclaim that he was both human and Divine. It is of interest to note that the title ‘Mac Mhuire’ or Mary’s Son, was the title given to him even more than ‘Chríost’ in Irish literature. And since that motherhood was extended to all humanity at the foot of the cross they regarded her as their spiritual Mother and kinswoman. They often used the ploy, in appealing to Christ for mercy or pardon, to claim relationship with him ‘on the mother’s side’. She was powerful, not on her own but by reason of her Son’s position. To deny her the rightful place eventually leads to the denial of the true identity of her Son.

“Mairg nach molann Máthair Dé” – To be pitied is the one who does not praise the Mother of God”

Epiphany of the Lord – 6th Jan. Learning from the Magi

The great thing about the Magi was their faith. Even though they were outsiders (Gentiles), they recognised Christ as the Saviour of the world.

The picture many people have of how the Magi came to Bethlehem goes somewhat like this. They saw a bright star in the eastern sky and began to follow it. The star guided them unerringly, first to Jerusalem, where it temporarily disappeared, and then to Bethlehem where they found the Child Jesus.

Their journey was neither simple nor easy. They encountered difficulties, doubts and dangers. Yet, in spite of these they persevered in their quest, and were rewarded when they finally found Christ. This is why their story has such relevance for us. Like them we too are on a journey. When we start out on some road, we too are attracted by something bright – an ideal or vision or hope. And we must expect to encounter difficulties and doubts. Some people think they are losing their faith when they experience doubt. We must not be surprised when this happens. We must imitate the Magi. We must not be too proud to ask for guidance. We must believe that the darkness will pass, and once again we will see the initial star beckoning to us.

The Magi can serve as models for us on our faith journey. They were single-minded. They refused to be put off by difficulties and hardships. When they found Christ they offered him gold, frankincense and myrrh. This shows what happens to those who find Christ. Their hearts are awakened and burst into life. When we find Christ and offer our love to him, he will help us to open up the treasures of goodness that lie buried inside us, so that we can offer ‘gifts’ to our brothers and sisters, especially those who are poor as Christ was. Having worshipped Christ, the Magi, ‘returned to their own country by another route’. This suggests not just a new geographical route, but a new mentality. Having met Christ and heard the Gospel, we too will travel through life by a different route. (Flor McCarthy S.D.B., Kilgarvan)

Blessing of the Infant Child

Heavenly Father,

As we wonder and hesitate to believe, like the shepherds of Bethlehem, fill our hearts with joy, as we recognise in this helpless babe the revelation of your love, a new radiant vision of your glory.

Filled with wonder at the nearness of our God in Mary’s newborn child, may we now offer him our praise, worship and thanksgiving and give him the love and loyalty of our hearts. Amen.

Blessing of the Crib

We pray, Father, that you bless this crib.

May it inspire all who pass by with the memory of your love.

May it brighten the hearts of our people and lighten their burden.

You have already done so much for us;

may the memory of this open our hearts for your Son, and for all your children in need.

Bless us with the peace the angels announced.

Teach us to recognize your Son as the shepherds did.

May the light of your word guide us to him,

as the star guided the wise men;

make us generous with the gifts you have given us,

just as the wise men were generous.

Teach us to ponder all these things in our hearts, as Mary did.

May we look forward with even greater joy to the day when Jesus will come again, so that the whole world may see the glory you have given him. He now lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, forever and ever. Amen

                                    11.30am Christmas Day.

            Making a Good Confession

“Prepare the way of the Lord!” is the great invitation of Advent. We call to mind the call to repentance of John the Baptist who invited the people of his time to recognise the mercy of the Lord and repent of their sins to make themselves ready for the coming of the promised Messiah. As we prepare for the celebration of Christ’s birth at Christmas, we too are invited to prepare to receive Him in our midst by celebrating the Lord’s forgiveness and mercy in the Sacrament of Reconciliation. This sacrament is given to us so that we might receive the forgiveness of sins which Christ promised us and to help us in our Christian lives as we strive to remove all the obstacles which interfere with our relationship with God and with our brothers and sisters in Christ.

1. Don’t worry

Perhaps it has been a while since your last confession or you find a particular sin especially difficult to confess. Don’t worry! The Lord is delighted that you are coming to him to receive His mercy and forgiveness and priest who is hearing your confession is glad to help you and will do his best to help you confess well. Anything you confess is totally confidential.

2. Make an examination of conscience

Before you come to confession, make an examination of conscience. Prayerfully ask the Lord to help you to remember your sins and to be truly sorry. You may want to use the 10 Commandments as a guide to help you remember your sins. Reflect on your relationship with God, with your family, with your friends and neighbours and with material things. Consider how you might do better in future and what concrete things you could do to grow in virtue and holiness.

3. Making your Confession

It helps to begin with a formula - Bless me Father for I have sinned – it is ______ since my last confession, and these are my sins:

Confess the sins that you remember – it can help to begin with the most difficult sin to confess; it will be easier afterwards to mention the rest. If you have difficulty, don’t be afraid to ask the priest for help. He will help you to make a good confession. Place your trust in God – He is your merciful Father and wants to forgive you.

You may conclude your confession by adding I am sorry for these and for all the sins of my past life.

The priest will give you a penance to complete after confession and may have some advice for you to help you be a better Christian. He will then invite you to make an act of contrition, such as the following:

O my God, I thank you for loving me, I am sorry for all my sins, for what I have done and what I have failed to do. Help me to do your will in everything I do and say. I will try sincerely to walk in your light today and always.

4. Receiving the Lord’s Forgiveness

The priest will then pray the words of absolution, bless and encourage you – listen attentively and answer Amen!

5. After Confession

We ask God’s blessing on our Jesse tree, reminding us of our ancestors before Christ, the Son of David.

We read in sacred scripture:

Tá bachlóg ag eascar as bun chrann Ieise,

an Tiarna ag lonnú air. Íseáia 11:1-2.

Let us pray:

Heavenly Father, bless this tree, a reminder to us of your covenanted love, shown to your people, our ancestors, through the events of history in ancient times. May your son Christ, the shoot of Jesse, the true vine, invigorate us with his life and love, so that we may become his living branches in our world today. AMEN.

“The Story of the Origin of Jesus Christ … and The Jesse Tree” See Matt. 1:1-17

It is timely how eminent US Bible scholar Fr. Raymond E. Brown challenges all Christians to have a serious look “at the list of Jesus’ ancestors” he examines the good, the bad and the ugly of “the total generations from Abraham to David (14 generations); and from David to the Babylonian exile (14 more) and finally from the exile to the Christ (14 more):

“Matthew’s genealogy is telling us that the story of Jesus Christ contains as many sinners as saints and is written with the crooked lines of liars and betrayers and the immoral, and not only with straight lines… A God who did not hesitate to use the scheming as well as the noble, the impure as well as the pure, men to whom the world hearkened and women upon whom the world frowned – this God continues to work through the same melange. If it was a challenge to recognize in the last part of Matthew’s genealogy that totally unknown people were part of the story of Jesus Christ, it may be a greater challenge to recognize that the unknown characters of today are an essential part of the sequence… He has not hesitated to entrust the sequence of the story to a hierarchically structured church, guaranteed with promises, but not free from its own share of the corrupt, the venal, the stupid, and the ineffective. Those “Christians” who proclaim that they believe in and love Jesus but cannot accept the Church or the institution because it is far from perfect and sometimes a scandal have not understood the beginning of the story and consequently are not willing to face the challenge of the sequence.”

Feast of the Immaculate Conception

Holy Day of Obligation

We celebrate Mary, who from the first instant of her existence in the womb of her mother Anne was ‘by a singular grace and privilege of Almighty God, and in view of the merits of Jesus Christ, Saviour of the human race, preserved free from all stain of original sin’. We give praise to God, font of grace and source of Mary’s holiness, as we honour her today.

Genesis 3:9-15, 20.

This selection from Genesis carries the reassurance that in spite of sin the human race is not to be written off. It is the story of disobedience and of sin but this is not the whole story. Fear and shame are the signs of sin and so Adam and Eve hide from God. Yet, despite their sin, they are still chosen by God and ‘Eve’ is called ‘mother of all the living’.

Ephesians 1:3-6, 11-12

From the beginning of time we were chosen by God. St. Paul tells us that before the world was made, God chose us in Christ. We are reminded that by virtue of our baptism we are chosen and set free from sin. The chosen of God belong to him. All of this is part of God’s great plan of salvation – a plan, in which Mary plays a pivotal role.

Luke 1:26-38

The focus of the reading is on the conception of Jesus, not Mary. This is all part of God’s planning and preparation. Mary, in her conversation with the angel (God’s messenger), is questioning, yet, she remains open and accepting compared to Eve in the Genesis story who is blaming others and defensive. Mary’s words are of willingness to allow God act in and through her. As a result, her child is holy, the work of God and the new creation. She becomes the ‘new Eve’. Mary is truly blessed – Luke who is writing after the death, resurrection and glorification of Christ, sees in Mary the agent and vehicle of God’s new creation – she will bring forth “he who is God’s promised one, who will save his people from their sins”.

Advent Wreath Blessing 2011

Today we begin preparing to celebrate, with hope filled joy, the coming of the Lord at Christmas. We ask God’s blessing on this wreath of evergreens.

“The Word was the real light that gives light to everyone; he was coming into the world, from his fullness, we have, all of us received.” John 1:9-16

Let us pray: Father, all powerful Lord of Light, bless our wreath of evergreens with its candles.

May our Advent be a time of preparation. Help us reflect on the power of light to dispel darkness in our world and in our lives. Touch our hearts with the warmth of your love. May the increasing light of these candles brighten our minds and hearts to be steadfast in faith, joyful in hope and untiring in love, so that we are ready, again to receive in true peace, Jesus, the Light of the World, our Lord and Saviour. Amen.

1. The bell isn’t just any bell. The bell is calling everyone and inviting people to Mass. My school went to see the bell and it reminded everyone about the importance of our Faith. The bell has travelled all over Ireland. A priest from Dingle, Fr. Bernard is playing a big part in the organisation of the bell.

2. The Eucharistic Congress bell is part of our history and our religion. The bell means to listen to God. The bell is a key symbol of the 50th International Eucharistic Congress. Saint Patrick used a bell to get people to listen to him about the word of God. It’s origins are the Dominican Convent of Portstewart, Co. Down.

3. The bell has been fitted into a carrying frame in which it will be brought on foot from place to place around Ireland by teams of volunteers.

4. On Tuesday my school went to see the bell at twelve o’clock near the pier. Fr. Bernard was an organiser. It is a religious bell that gathers every one together and to remind us how important going to Mass is and how important God is in our lives.

5. St. Patrick went around telling people about God. I think the bell is a good way to call people back to pray. Many people have left praying and do not do it anymore. This is what I think the bell means.

6. When a bell calls it is calling people for something and I think the Bell is calling on people to think of their Faith. I think the bell reminds us to respect the Ten Commandments and to pray to God everyday.

7. It’s part of the religion and history. The bell is to listen to God. The bell means to pray and learn about God.

8. The bell is an object that calls everyone to come to Mass. Children from the local school and the public came to hear what the priest had to say about the bell. This bell is calling us to the Eucharistic Congress next year.

9. This is what the bell means to me: It calls back the people to the Church that said they were too busy with money. I think it bring a new renewal.

10. D’iompar Caoimhe Ní Ghealbháin, Áine Ní Mhuircheartaigh, Maria Ní Ghrifín agus Andrew Ó Flannúira an chlog ón veain go dtí an áit ina raibh gach duine bailithe i gcóir an seirbhís paidir. D’iompar mise, Susan Ní Mhuircheartaigh, Aoife Ní Ghráinne agus Róisín Rigg an clog go dtí an bád. Léigh Niamh Ní Ghrifín, An gClochar, Dara Mac Gearailt ó S. N. Iognáid Rís, Brian O Conchúir, Nicole Ní Dhubhshláine agus mise Guí an Phobail. B’onóir mhór é a bheith páirteach sa Turas Chlog Comhdála seo. Nuair a bhíomar ag iompar an clog bhraitheamar ana speisialta agus bhraitheamar níos congraí do Dhia. B’am ana naofa é.
Chuala mé mar gheall an cloigín don chéad uair an lá sin agus bhí an searmanas go deas agus an-shuimiúil.

Bhí an searmanas ana mhaith agus bhí an ceol ar fheabhas comh maith agus an canadh. Ní fhaca mé an chlog riamh go dtí seo.

Bhí an searmanais an-suimiúil agus bhaint mé taitneamh as an lá… It was really exciting seeing such a famous and holy bell visit our town… Bhí na paidreacha ana mhaith… It was great that we were able to see the Eucharistic Bell and that we could play music for it. I think that we all enjoyed it… It was great to have the bell visit the town. It gathered people together and we played music and sang lovely songs. I hope it comes here again. We really enjoyed it… Bhí an searmanais go hálainn. Bhí an smaoineamh a cuir an searmanas ar an gCé, go hiontach… sár-mhaith ..ana dheas. Is maith liom é… It was very educational for us and we learnt a lot about the bell. We got to see it but only for a few minutes and we sang. I had a good time… Bhí an aimsir an-mhaith… The Bell plays a very important part in our religious lives. This bell is going all around trying to help people to come back to the Church and pray and to live our lives like Jesus… The Bell means to me – listen to the word of God. The Bell means to me to respect God’s commandments… The Bell means to me embrace God’s love… There is a Congress Bell that is passed around the country. It calls us to prayer. It was in Dingle and it left for Valentia on the boat “Mam an Óraigh”. Me and my school went to the quay to see and honour the Congress Bell. The congress bell is a wonderful thing and was an honour to be in our parish… Bhí an aimsir go deas agus bhí sé go hálainn nuair a bhí an bád ag dul amach san fharraige… It was very exciting for the bell coming to Dingle. It was fun at the pier waving goodbye to it… Nuair a bhéim ábalta a labhairt go bhfaca mé é an cloigín nuar a bhfuilim sean…

Focal Scoir: As a child in 1932 Tomás Ó hIcheadha was present in Dublin for the Eucharistic Congress. Having accompanied it to Dún Chaoin, Baile an Fheirtéaraigh, Séipéal na Carraige agus Cuas, Fr. Tomás rang our pilgrim Congress Bell 3 x 3 x 3 x 9 and led the large assembly at the Quay, praying the Angelus.
