I, along with the Bishops from the 26 Dioceses of Ireland, are deeply grateful to you for the donations which you have given to the four National Collections which have been taken up for the 50th International Eucharistic Congress 2012 since 2009. Your support means that Ireland is able to extend a warm welcome to visitors to Dublin from Ireland as well as from all over the world for this very important event in the life of the Catholic Church.
I know that you will be with us, if not in person then in spirit, as we host this very important occasion, which has as its theme, The Eucharist Communion with Christ and with one another. I ask you to keep us in your prayers.
If you would like to offer further support to the Congress, please give your donation to your local priest. Your generosity is deeply appreciated and it is our intention to publish the full financial details of the Congress in due course.

We remind all families to be in their assigned seating at least 15 minutes before the First Communion Mass in Séipéal Naomh Muire on Sunday. We again remind all in church to switch off all Mobile Phones and of the Diocesan rule: “that photography and videoing is prohibited during the ceremony”.
We draw your attention to the artwork of our First Communicants. Together with the art on display from Lá an Easpaig, we present it as truly something beautiful for God at Pentecost. Our special thanks to all our teachers and children for their work
“Comaoine le Críost agus le chéile”.

Children’s Prayer before Communion
Lord Jesus, come to me.
Lord Jesus, give me your love.
Lord Jesus, come to me and give me yourself.
Lord Jesus, friend of children, come to me.
Lord Jesus you are my Lord and my God.
Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ.
Children’s Prayer after Communion
Lord Jesus I love and adore you.
You are a special friend to me.
Welcome Lord Jesus, O welcome,
Thank you for coming to me.
Thank your, Lord Jesus, O thank you,
For giving yourself to me.
Make me strong to show your love
Where ever I may be.
Be near me, Lord Jesus, I ask you to stay.
Close by me forever and love me I pray.
Bless all of us children in your loving care,
And bring us to heaven to live with you there.
I’m ready now Lord Jesus,
To show how much I care.
I’m ready now to give your love
At home and everywhere.

A 100th Birthday Blessing Prayer
As we rejoice with Nell O’Sullivan on her 100th birthday, we thank God for all the blessings of life, and pray for greater growth. So let us thank God for life and growth:
Blessed are you, Lord God, giver of life and growth:
You have been with Nell to this day of her life;
May that life be always nourished by you.
R. Moladh go deo le Dia.
Blessed are you, Lord Jesus Christ,
Living among us you grew in wisdom and age and grace; may Nell grow in grace and knowledge of you. R.
Blessed are you, Holy Spirit, Lord of love,
You have filled Nell with your sevenfold gifts;
May she live in truth and love. R.
Lord God, we thank you for the years to come with your protection, help and strength; so that in the fullness of time she may come to the eternal celebration of life.
We ask this through Christ our Lord. AMEN
“Go maire tú chéad” is the great Irish salutation on occasions like this. The O’Sullivan family have come from overseas to the family home for a Mass in Thanksgiving as that prayerful greeting has been surpassed. Uachtarán na hÉireann has sent his special greetings. To add to the joy of the occasion the family greyhounds took first and second prizes on the track this weekend. Comhghairdeas.

Guímís.
A Thiarna Dia, go dtaga Do bheannacht anuas ar an bhfoirgneamh seo a tógadh chun cúrsaí léinn a chur ar fáil; go mbí sé ina ionad fírinne agus eagna.
Cuir Do bheannacht orthu siúd a oibreoidh ann; tabhair tacaíocht agus spreagadh dá mhúinteoirí agus iad i mbun a ngairm.
Bronn sláinte agus gaois ar a scoláirí agus an grásta chun Tú, maille len a gcó-scolairí, a ghráú mar a ghraíonn Íosa sin. Go dté siad in eagnaíocht agus i ngrásta chun saol Críostaí daonna a mhaireachtáil amach anseo rompu.
Cuir Do bheannacht orthu siúd a thóg an foirgneamh agus orthu uiligh idir lucht dearadh, maoiniú agus tacaíocht a chuir len’ a thógáil. Cuir Do bheannacht orainn uiligh a thiomnaíonn sin féin ath-uair don bhfírinne. Seo é an tabhartas a iarraimid tré Íosa Críost, ár dTiarna. Amen.

World Communications Day
This annual day provides an opportunity to be still and to listen, opening up a two-way communication with God.
‘Word and silence: learning to communicate is learning to listen and contemplate as well as speak. This is especially important for those engaged in the task of evangelization: both silence and word are essential elements, integral to the Church’s work of communication for the sake of a renewed proclamation of Christ in today’s world.’
Pope Benedict IVX
In his acclaimed 1979 Dublin address to all media professionals the late Pope John Paul II asked them to merely “love their neighbour” in all their professional work. Recent reports found this virtue regrettably lacking in some RTE productions over the past 12 months.
We pray for all those involved in the media on this Feast of the Ascension of Our Lord.

A New Pentecost
A Cháirde, “The focus this year is on the work of the Holy Spirit in our lives, in the Church and in our Land, especially in our diocese of Kerry.
Recent Popes prayed for “a New Pentecost”, “a fresh outpouring of the Holy Spirit”, “a new springtime in the Church”.
With this in mind a prayer initiative has been launched in Kerry. A Prayer Card is made available in the Porch – please take and use for personal prayer.” Grace Condra

Déanaigí É Seo i gCuimhne
40,000 Irish families are participating in this year’s parish programme in preparation for First Confession and First Communion. Already some parishes in England are adopting this Irish approach to Sacramental preparation of the children in which school, family and parish work together to ensure adequate preparation.
The Veritas handbook in its guidelines tells us that “the Sunday Eucharist is the most appropriate context for the celebration of First Communion …
Good Sunday habits will provide a solid foundation for a vibrant celebration of First Holy Communion”. (P. 119)
Our own parish programme began last September when all parents / guardians were invited to any one of three meetings to outline the course. Following upon this we celebrated Enrolment Masses at S. Caitlín, S. Eoin Baiste and St. Mary’s on the weekend of October 1st and 2nd when each child received the gift of a special candle as centrepiece of their Sacred Space in their family home.
God of love,
We ask you to bless these candles.
They will be carried by the children to their homes.
We pray that when the children gather
in prayer with their families,
These flames will be a reminder of your loving presence.
We make this prayer through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
Every month since then each enrolled family has received the Grapevine /An Fhíniúin through the good offices of the volunteer parent leaders to aid family prayer, discussion and preparation for the upcoming Liturgy the following month. Before Christmas each child brought their Rosary Beads for blessing and brought home a bottle of Holy Water for their Sacred Space in a project encouraging devotion and prayer. Throughout the year all these children have been invited to gather around the Ambo for the Gospel and a dialogue homily afterwards and they all worked to decorate our three Advent Jesse Trees. At Communion time the children gathered around the altar for a special personal blessing.
In the New Year attention was focused on preparation for First Confession which we celebrated during the first week of March. During Holy Week some of the children and their parents participated in the Washing of the Feet ceremony of Holy Thursday on a day commemorating the Institution of the Eucharist.
Comhghairdeas ó chroí dos na leanaí agus na tuismitheoirí/caomhnóirí ó Scoil Eoin Baiste, Lios Póil a ghlac an Chéad Comaoine an Domhnach seo caite.
Táimid go léir ag siúl leis an gceiliúradh chéanna i Séipéal Naomh Caitlín agus Naomh Muire roimh deireadh na míosa.
We remind all families to be in their assigned seating at least 15 minutes before the First Communion Masses. We again remind all in Church to switch off all Mobile Phones and of the Diocesan rule “that photography and videoing is prohibited during the ceremony”.

First Communion dates:
Séipéal Caitlín: Dé Domh. 20ú Bealtaine 10.30am. Séipéal Naomh Muire: Sunday 27ú May 11.30am.
Corpus Christi Procession Sunday 10th June 11.30am for the whole Parish Community.

Bréanainn Naofa – Bealtaine 16ú
Iomann Bhréanainn Naofa – Pátrún Chiarraí
A Bhréanainn naofa, ár laoch ‘s ár n-éarlamh,
an saol so thréigis nuair ghlaoigh Mac Dé ort;
do dhreapais sléibhte mar Mhaois is Élias,
is Críost é féinig go cnoc a chéasta.

Id’ naomhóig shnasta do threabhais an bhóchna,
ag súil go gcasfaí i dTír na mbeo thú;

(Canaimís: Dr. Diarmaid Ó Súilleabháin Easpag Chiarraí 1985-’94 & An t-Ath. Pádraig Ó Fiannachta;)

Brendan of Ardfert was baptised by Bishop Erc at Tobar na Molt in the Parish of Ardfert in 484. Tradition tells us that having been fostered by Naomh Íde he was ordained Priest at Tearmann Eirc, Lerrig, Kilmoyley in 512. He has many foundations including Ardfert and especially Clonfert, Co. Galway where he is reputed to be buried between 576 – 583. (Ó Riain).
Brendan’s fame “rests mainly on Navigatio Brendani, the ‘Brendan Voyage’ arguably the most influential of all medieval texts … preserved in 120 manuscripts of continental provenance.”
(A Dictionary of Irish Saints: Pádraig Ó Riain. P. 115. Fourcourts Press 2011)
Féile na Bealtaine & St. Joseph the Worker
Dingle Liturgy Group thank all our carpenters and woodworkers idir óg agus aosta who presented in procession “the work of human hands”. The exhibition of their skill and craft on view in the St. Mary’s Sanctuary at all Masses last, Féile na Bealtaine weekend, was a delight to behold.

First Holy Communion Lios Póil

Pope Benedict speaking to boys & girls preparing for their First Holy Communion (15/10/2005)

Andrea asked: “Dear Pope, what are your memories of your First Communion day”?

The Pope replied: “I would first like to say thank you for this celebration of faith that you are offering to me, for your presence and for your joy. I greet you and thank you for the hug I have received from some of you, a hug that, of course, symbolically stand for you all.

As for the question, of course I remember my First Communion day very well. It was a lovely Sunday in March 1936, 69 years ago. It was a sunny day, the church looked very beautiful, there was music…. There were so many beautiful things that I remember. There were about 30 of us, boys and girls from my little village of no more than 500 inhabitants.

But at the heart of my joyful and beautiful memories is this one – and your spokesperson said the same thing: I understood that Jesus had entered my heart, he had actually visited me. And with Jesus, God himself was with me. And I realized that this is a gift of love that is truly worth more than all the other things that life can give.

So on that day I was really filled with great joy, because Jesus came to me and I realized that a new stage in my life was beginning, I was 9 years old, and that it was henceforth important to stay faithful to that encounter, to that communion. I promised the Lord as best I could: “I always want to stay with you”, and I prayed to him, “but above all, stay with me”. So I went on living my life like that; thanks be to God, the Lord has always taken me by the hand and guided me, even in difficult situations.

Thus, that day of my First Communion was the beginning of a journey made together. I hope that for all of you too, the First Communion you have received in this Year of the Eucharist will be the beginning of a lifelong friendship with Jesus, the beginning of a journey together, because in walking with Jesus we do well and life becomes good.”

Queen of the May / Bring Flowers of the Rarest

Refrain:

O Mary we crown thee with blossoms today!
Queen of the Angels and Queen of the May.
O Mary we crown thee with blossoms today,
Queen of the Angels and Queen of the May.

Bring flowers of the rarest
bring blossoms the fairest,
from garden and woodland and hillside and dale;
our full hearts are swelling,
our glad voices telling
the praise of the loveliest flower of the vale!

Refrain:

Their lady they name thee,
Their mistress proclaim thee,
Ah, grant that thy children on earth be as true
as long as the bowers
are radiant with flowers,
as long as the azure shall keep its bright hue.

May Altar in Your Home
We invite every home to set up a simple May Altar during Our Lady’s Month. All children of this year’s Confirmation and Do This in Memory programmes were invited to create a Sacred Space at home. This would be a perfect setting for a May Altar by adding a statue / picture of Muire Máthair Dé and some fresh flowers / greenery from the field or garden.
Remembering Fr. Patrick Peyton’s mantra “The family that prays together, stays together”, may be a time for all of us to renew family prayer and the Rosary.
Ó ‘Mhuire Mháthair, mo mhíle grá thú,
mo choimirce chúnta in am gach gá thú,
mo dhochtúir leighis, tinn agus slán, tú,
agus n’urra breá beannaithe le Flaitheas
na ngrás thú.
(Ár bPaidreacha Dúchais: Diarmuid Ó Laoghaire, S.J.)
Lá Bealtaine
“The first of May, or Lá Bealtaine [May Day] as she called it, was very special. It was customary to get up before sunrise to bring in the ‘summer’. In her younger days she would bring in branches from the various trees and keep these in the house until the following year. When I was young my father continued that tradition, and if he wasn’t at home my grandmother made sure that we got to bring in the summer some hours before going to school. She used to recite the little dán:

Thugamar féin an samhradh linn,
[We ourselves brought the summer with us,
Thugamar linn é is cé bhainfidh dínn é?
We brought it with us and who will take it from us?
Thugamar féin an samhradh linn,
We ourselves brought the summer with us,
Samhradh samhradh bainne na ngamhna,
Summer summer the milk of calves,
Thugamar féin an samhradh linn,
We brought the summer with us,
Samhradh buí fé luí na gréine,
A yellow summer under the setting sun,
Thugamar féin an samhradh linn.
We ourselves brought the summer with us.
Cuileann is coll is trom is cárthann,
Holly and hazel and elder and rowan,
Thugamar féin an samhradh linn,
We ourselves brought the summer with us,
Fuiseog gléigeal Béal an Átha,
Shimmering bright ash from the Mouth of the Ford,
Thugamar féin an Samhradh linn.
We ourselves brought the summer with us].

This was a dán with several verses, but I cannot remember the remainder of the poem”. (Verling 2003:143-144). Béarrach Mná ag Caint – (Seanchas Mhairéad Ní Mhioncháin ag Martin Verling 1999)

Comaoine le Críost agus le Chéile
Christian Solidarity: The Eucharist, understood in terms of Communion, is the effective sign of Christian solidarity, which promotes appropriate participation. Solidarity sees the other as a neighbour who is ‘to be made a sharer on a par with ourselves in the banquet of life to which all are equally invited by God’ [Sollicitudo Rei Socialis, 39]. Under this heading one might explore how the Eucharist underpins the key principles of Catholic Social Teaching, such as the ‘universal destination of goods’, ‘the right to participation’, ‘the priority of labour over capital’, and ‘love of preference for the poor.’

St. Mark Evangelist
Feast Day – April 25th
St. Mark was closely connected with the preaching of Ss Peter, Paul and Barnabas. His Gospel was probably written at Rome when he was with Paul, and is traditionally viewed as representing St. Peter’s approach to the preaching of the good news. His symbol is a winged lion.
Mark the Evangelist is the traditional author of the Gospel of Mark. He is one of the Seventy Disciples of Christ, and the founder of the Church of Alexandria, one of the original four main sees of Christianity.
Peter picked Mark and took him as travel companion and interpreter. Mark the Evangelist wrote down the sermons of Peter, thus composing the Gospel according to Mark (Eccl. Hist. 15-16), before he left for Alexandria in the third year of Claudius (AD 43).
In AD 43, about 10 years after the Ascension of Christ, Mark traveled to Alexandria and founded the Church of Alexandria, which today is claimed by the Coptic Orthodox Church. Aspects of the Coptic liturgy can be traced back to Saint Mark himself. He became the first bishop of Alexandria and he is honored as the founder of Christianity in Africa.
Later Coptic tradition says that he was martyred in AD 68. It is believed that on the night when Jesus was arrested in the garden of Gethsemane Mark had followed him there and the Temple guards saw him, he ran away and dropped his loin cloth.

Ón dTraidisiún
“Matthew, Mark, Luke and John
Bless this bed I lie upon”.

Ag Dul a Chodladh

Mar a luíonn Mac Dé ar an gcrois;

A Mhuire mhuirneach, mo mhíle grá thú,
Mo dhochtúir leighis, tinn agus slán thú.
Ar cheithre phostaí na leapan,
Go raibh na ceithre aingeal atá m’fhaire,
Agus má fhaighimse bás as seo go maidin,
I bhflaithis Dé go raibh m’anam.

Dingle Parish Pastoral Council has been receiving feedback, both adverse and positive on this service. Situations beyond our control regarding broadband delivery of this service sometimes fall short of all our hopes and expectations. On the positive note we include two recent communications as follows;

“Thank you so much for the Mass for my parents’ anniversary which we were able to watch via video link. It really was lovely. I marvel at the changes in technology in Green St. from the crackling radio and snowy figures on telly in my youth to the present. Again many thanks. Le gach dea-ghuí.” (Dublin Resident)

“I love watching the live stream of the Mass! It makes me feel so connected even though I am so far away. To watch and listen is amazing! The Altar looks wonderful. Thank you.”

Our Mass, Our Life

Writing in his 1968 booket, Our Mass, Our Life Fr Diarmuid Ó Laoghaire SJ mentions a West Kerry tradition:

Naturally many prayers centre round the moment  of the Mass, the  Consecration. One  who lived in Lios  Póil in Kerry fifty years ago used to hear  the  people say at the  elevation of the Host: ‘Failte romhat, a Shlanaitheoir Íosa Criost’  (Welcome, Jesus  Christ,  Saviour).

He also pointed out how the Kerry tradition expressed poetically the theology of our participation in the Mass:

‘Siulaimid mar aon leis an Maighdin Mhuire agus leis na daoine naofa eile a bhí ag tionlacadh a haon-Mhic ar Chnoc Calbharaí’ (We walk together with the Virgin Mary and the other holy people who accompanied her only Son on the Hill of Calvary).

Finally, he passes on a poetic translation of the Lord’s Prayer into Irish by the Sliabh Luachra poet, Eoghan Rua Ó Suilleabháin:

Ár nAthair atá ar Neamh

do cheap sinn féin ar dtúis,

go naomhaíthear t’ainm

is go dtagaimid go leir id dhún,

t’aon-toil bheannaithe

ar an dtalamh go ndéanann súd

fé mar dheineann gach neach ar Neamh

nuair a théid id dhún.

An t-arán geal do cheapais fein dúinn tabhair

is ár gcionta ar fad go maithir féinig dúinn,

fé ,mar a mhaith an Mac don fhear gan néall ‘na shúil,

Na lig sinn sa ríocht san as nach féidir teacht

in aon drochní ná i dtintibh daora i dteas,

ach amen, a Chríost, agus lig sinn go léir isteach.

Our Father who art in Heaven who fashioned us in the beginning may your name be made holy and may we all enter your house:

your holy and only will may we do it on earth as does everyone in Heaven who enters in. The bright bread you made for us, give us,

and all our sins may you yourself forgive as the Son forgave the

man of the sightless eyes. Let us not go into that kingdom whence

there is no return, no, nor into any evil thing nor into the fiercesome fires, but amen, o Christ, do you admit us all.

HOLY WEEK 2012
Passion Sunday (Palm Sunday) Holy Week begins on this Sunday with the commemoration of the entrance of the Lord into Jerusalem. The palms are blessed and should be taken home, where they will serve as a reminder of the victory of Christ. Next year, they will be burned and placed on our foreheads on Ash Wednesday.
Mass of Chrism This Mass, which the Bishop concelebrates with his college of priests and at which he consecrates the holy chrism and blesses the other oils, manifests the communion of the priests with their bishop. These oils will be used in the Sacraments of Baptism, Confirmation, Ordination and Anointing of the sick during the next year.
The Easter Triduum The Fathers of the Church saw this celebration as a unitive commemoration: St Augustine spoke of ‘the most holy triduum of the crucified, buried & risen Lord’.
Holy Thursday This Mass is, first of all, the memorial of the institution of the Eucharist. The tradition of washing the feet should be maintained. The Altar of Repose for the reservation of the Blessed Sacrament that will be distributed in Communion on Good Friday, should be prepared and adorned in such a way as to be conductive to prayer and meditation. The faithful are encouraged to spend some time at the Altar of Repose during the night before the Blessed Sacrament.
Good Friday Celebration of the Lord’s Passion. On this day when ‘Christ our passover was sacrificed’ (1 Cor 5:7), the Church meditates on the Passion of her Lord, venerates the Cross, commemorates her origin from the side of Christ on the Cross, and intercedes for the salvation of the whole world. On this day, in accordance with ancient tradition, the Church does not celebrate Eucharist; Holy Communion is distributed to the faithful during the celebration of the Lord’s Passion. Devotions, such as the Way of the Cross are encouraged today.
The Easter Vigil In accordance with ancient tradition, this night is one of the vigil for the Lord. St. Augustine called it the ‘mother of all vigils’. There are four parts to the Rite: 1. Service of Light: The new fire should be blessed to light the Paschal Candle. 2. Liturgy of the Word 3. Liturgy of Baptism when all congregations renew their baptismal vows in this Year of Priest. 4. Liturgy of the Eucharist. ‘Christ is Risen, Alleluia!’

Repent & Believe the Good News

The Bishops of Ireland have published a letter about penance, reconciliation and repentance called Repent & Believe the Good News [PDF format].

Holy Week is a special time to re-discover the Good News of the Gospel by experiencing God’s Mercy in the sacrament of Confession.  As we prepare to celebrate the Lord’s Resurrection, it is good to do so with heart & soul renewed through the forgiveness He gives us.

Catechism of the Catholic Church – Par 1449:

The formula of absolution used in the Latin Church expresses the essential elements of this sacrament: the Father of mercies is the source of all forgiveness. He effects the reconciliation of sinners through the Passover of his Son and the gift of his Spirit, through the prayer and ministry of the Church:

 God, the Father of mercies,
through the death and the resurrection of his Son
has reconciled the world to himself
and sent the Holy Spirit among us
for the forgiveness of sins;
through the ministry of the Church
may God give you pardon and peace,
and I absolve you from your sins in the name of the Father, and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.
