Deastógáil na Maighdine Beannaithe Muire

A Mhuire na ngrás, a Mháthair Mhic Dé,

Go gcuire tú ar mo leas mé.

Go sábhála tú mé ar muir is ar tír.

Go sábhála tú mé ar lic na bpian.

Garda na n-aingeal os mo chionn;

Dia romham is Dia liom.

Mary Mother Full of Grace,

Guide my feet on the proper course.

Keep me safe from every evil.

Keep me safe in Body and Soul.

Keep me safe on Land and Sea.

Keep me safe in my agony.

Ranks of Angels to guard my Head;

God in front and at my side.

(This English translation is by Séamus Heaney for the Imogen Stuart Madonna and Child in Mary Immaculate College, Limerick.)

Miúin

‘Ar deireadh, agus a seal saoil ar talamh caite aici, rinneadh an Mhaighdean gan smál, a chaomhnaigh Dia ó lorg ar bith de pheaca na tsinsir, a thógáil suas, idir chorp agus anam go glóir na bhflaitheas agus a mhóradh ag an Tiarna mar Bhanríon na cruinne, sa chaoi gurb amhlaidh ba chomhchosúla í lena Mac, Tiarna na dtiarnaí, an Té a rug an bua ar an pheaca agus ar an bhás.’ Páirteachas éagsamhalta in Aiséirí a Mic is ea Deastógáil na Maighdine Beannaithe agus réamhléiriú ar aiséirí na gcríostaithe eile:

I do luí seoil choinnigh tú do mhaighdeanas; ag titim I do chodladh duit níor fhág tú an domhan seo, a Mháthair Dé. Tá tú tar éis filleadh ar fhoinse na Beatha, tusa a ghabh an Dia beo agus shaorfaidh le d’urnaí ár n-anamacha ón bás.

…is í ár Máthair í de réir ord an ghrásta.

Is í an Mhaighdean Bheannaithe eiseamláir ar chreidimh agus na carthanachta don Eaglais, mar gur lean sí go hiomlán do thoil an Athar, do shaothar slánaitheach a Mic agus do gach spreagadh a fuair sí ón Spiorad Naomh. Mar sin, is é ‘an ball is oirirce san Eaglais í, nach bhfuil a leithéid eile ann; go fiú gur ‘réalú eiseamlárach’, ar an Eaglais atá inti.

Marian Reflection

Extracts from The Praises of Mary attributed to St Lomman.

Joy of the Father, Love of the Son,

Delight of the Holy Spirit, delight of the Most High God.

Thou who knew not man, Mother of the Holy One,

Mother of Him Who was never made.

He drank life from thy breasts.

Before Adam He knew thee,

To Adam He told of thee.[…]
From thy pure flesh was made Food for us who know thy Son.
Beautiful Mary, you raised women to a new dignity.
Adam’s Fall did not stain thee.
Thy body did not know corruption.
Peaceful sleep fell upon thee.
Thy feet rested on the wings of angels.
In their hands they carried thee.
The heavens opened to thee. You reign with thy Son.
He placed the Scepter in thy hand.
The world He made thy footstool,  Who rulest with love.
The thrones of the great shall fall before thee.

The Praises of Mary, attributed to the 7th Century Abbot St Lomman, were passed down in the oral folklore of the Midlands until finally being put to paper in the 20th Century by Fr Andrew Shaw PP of Kilcormac, Co Offaly

Reflection

“Praise the Lord, Jerusalem;

He feeds you with the finest wheat”. (Psalm 147)

Let the wealthy and great

Roll in splendour and state

I envy them not, I declare it.

I eat my own lamb,

My chickens and ham,

I shear my own fleece and I wear it.

I have lawns, I have bowers,

I have fruit, I have flowers,

The lark is my morning alarmer.

So jolly boys now

Here’s God speed the plough,

Long life and success

to the Farmer.

“They go out, they go out full of tears,

Bearing seed for the sowing.

They come back, they come back with joyful shouts,

Bringing into the barns their harvested sheaves.” (Psalm 126)

(The poem is written by the late Patrick O’Connor, who farmed at Knocknahow, Dingle.)

Blessing Dingle Regatta 2010

Listen kindly to our prayers, O Lord, and as you once blessed the ark of Noah as it was borne over the flood, bless all the boats of Dingle Regatta and all who will sail in them with your holy right hand. Stretch our your hand to them, as you did to Peter when he walked upon the sea, and send your holy angel from heaven to keep the boats and all in them from every harm. Keep them safe, grant them a tranquil voyage and a safe harbour; and once their journey is done, bring them home content. Through Christ our Lord. Amen.

Trasna na dTonnta

Trasna na dtonnta ‘dul siar, ‘dul siar,

Slán leis an uaigneas is slán leis an gcian.

Geal é mo chroí agus geal í an ghrian,

Geal bheith ag filleadh go hÉirinn.

Muintir an Iarthair ‘s iad cairde mo chroí.

Fáilte is féile beidh romham ar gach taobh.

Ar fhágáil an tsaoil seo ‘s é ghuím ar an Rí

Gur leo sin a sínfear i gcill mé.
