Cemetery Masses 2011

Last Tuesday night’s Mass in Ráithín a’ Thuaidh marked the last in our series of 7 Cemetery Masses this year.  It was wonderful to see young and old gather in the different graveyards to remember their beloved dead and to pray for those who have no one left to remember them.  It is a holy and a wholesome thing to pray for the dead.  (2 Macc 12:46)

Fr Tomás and Fr Bernard extend a particular word of thanks to the committees and helpers in each cemetery who prepared the altars and the cemeteries for these Masses.  Such celebrations are only possible with the enthusiasm and support of those associated with the cemeteries.  Thanks are also due to the cemetery caretakers and to those who assisted with the liturgies by reading, singing, playing music, assisting with Holy Communion and in any other way.

Our list of cemetery Masses for 2012 will be printed in our Parish Calendar which will be distributed just before Christmas.  We will also be remembering our faithful departed during the November Masses in all 3 parish churches – details can be found in the 2011 Parish Calendar.

Beannaím daoibh, a fhíréana Chríost,

Atá anseo ag feitheamh le haiséirí glórmhar.

An té a d’fhulaing páis ar bhur son

Go dtuga sé suaimhneas síoraí daoibh.

Best wishes to all those who received their Leaving Certificate examination results during the week.   We pray that our young people will have the help and the guidance of the Holy Spirit as they choose their path for the future.  May they always know the presence of God in their lives and respond generously to His call to use their gifts and talents wisely.

Tar, a Spioraid Naoimh.

Líon anama na bhfíréan

agus las tine do ghrá iontu.

Seol uait do Spiorad agus cruthófar iad

agus athnuachfaidh tú an domhan go léir.

Tusa a theagasc croíthe na bhfíréan

trí sholas an Spioraid Naoimh.

Deónaigh, trí dheontas an Spioraid chéanna

go mbeidh muid I gcónaí fíor-chríonna

agus go siorraí gliondrach I n-a shonas.

Trí Chríost Ár dTiarna. Amén.

Rós Chiarraí

Best wishes to Síle Ní Dheargáin of Baile na Saor as she represents Kerry in the International Rose of Tralee Festival. Go néirí go geal leat, a Shíle.

The Rose of Tralee

The pale moon was rising above the green mountains,
The sun was declining beneath the blue sea,
When I strayed with my love by the pure crystal fountain,
That stands in the beautiful Vale of Tralee.

She was lovely and fair as the rose of the summer,
Yet ’twas not her beauty alone that won me.
Oh no, ’twas the truth in her eyes ever dawning
That made me love Mary, the Rose of Tralee.

The cool shades of evening their mantle were spreading,
And Mary all smiling was listening to me.
The moon through the valley her pale rays was shedding,
When I won the heart of the Rose of Tralee.

She was lovely and fair as the rose of the summer,
Yet ’twas not her beauty alone that won me.
Oh no, ’twas the truth in her eyes ever dawning
That made me love Mary, the Rose of Tralee.

In the far fields of India ‘mid war’s dreadful thunders,
Her voice was solace and comfort to me.
But the chill hand of death has now rent us asunder,
I’m lonely tonight for the Rose of Tralee.

She was lovely and fair as the rose of the summer,
Yet ’twas not her beauty alone that won me.
Oh no, ’twas the truth in her eyes ever dawning

That made me love Mary, the Rose of Tralee.

World Youth Day Madrid 2011

15th to 21st August

Planted and Built Up in Jesus Christ, Firm in the Faith

(cf. Col 2:7)

Our best wishes go to the 1.5 million young people from all over the world who are gathered in Spain for World Youth Day.  Amongst them are four pilgrims from our parish: Emer Noonan, Minard Thiar; Susan Dillon, Baile Beag; Liam Antaine Ó Cathasaigh, Páirc an Teampaill agus Maitiú Seán Ó Grifín, Minard Thoir.

Some of the media coverage of World Youth Day has focussed on the protesters who oppose the event – but their numbers are dwarfed by the 30,000 volunteers who are running the various World Youth Day events, to say nothing of the 1.5 million young people who have gathered to celebrate their faith.  That’s real good news!

Addressing the young pilgrims at the Plaza del Cibeles on Thursday night, Pope Benedict XVI encouraged the young pilgrims:

Dear young people, listen closely to the words of the Lord, that they may be for you “spirit and life” (Jn 6:63), roots which nourish your being, a rule of life which likens us – poor in spirit, thirsting for justice, merciful, pure in heart, lovers of peace – to the person of Christ. Listen regularly every day as if he were the one friend who does not deceive, the one with whom we wish to share the path of life. Of course, you know that when we do not walk beside Christ our guide, we get lost on other paths, like the path of our blind and selfish impulses, or the path of flattering but self-serving suggestions, deceiving and fickle, which leave emptiness and frustration in their wake.

The Pope will be meeting the young pilgrims and addressing them again at the Prayer Vigil on Saturday August 20thand at Mass on Sunday August 21st.  In addition to the liturgies with the Pope, the World Youth Day activities will include times for prayer, confession, Mass and catechesis.  Clergy and laity from all over the world will be meeting with the young people in order to guide them and encourage them in their faith.  There will also be cultural events and informal musical gatherings, to say nothing of the joyful experience of meeting enthusiastic young Catholics from all over the world.

Once World Youth Day 2011 has finished, all eyes will be on Rio de Janeiro in Brazil for World Youth Day 2013.  We Irish will also be looking towards 2012 when thousands of pilgrims will be coming to Dublin for the International Eucharistic Congress.

“With all my heart, I say again to you young people: let nothing and no one take away your peace; do not be ashamed of the Lord. He did not spare himself in becoming one like us and in experiencing our anguish so as to lift it up to God, and in this way he saved us.”

Benedict XVI Madrid 2011
