Laochra an Chreidimh No.10
Saint Bernadette Soubirous 1844-79
Born at Lourdes, France, on January 7, the oldest child of miller Francis Soubirous and his wife, Louise. She was called Bernadette as a child, lived in abject poverty with her parents, was uneducated, and suffered from asthma. Her father became bankrupt as many of his customers failed to pay him for milling services rendered. They lost their Boly Mill home and found refuge in the abandoned jailhouse called the Cachot meaing the dungeon.
On February 11th 1858, while collecting firewood on the banks of the Gave River near Lourdes, she saw a vision of the Virgin Mary in a cave above the riverbank. “I went to the banks of the Gave to gather firewood together with other girls. I lifted my head and looked towards the grotto and saw a lady dressed in white. She had a white dress, a blue sash and a yellow rose on each foot, the same colour as the chain of her rosary. When I saw that, I rubbed my eyes; I thought I was mistaken.”
Her report provoked scepticism, but her daily visions of the Lady from February 18 through March 4 drew great crowds of people. Despite great hostility on the part of the civil authorities, she persisted in her claims, and on February 25 a spring flowed where none had been before. On March 25, the vision told her it was the Immaculate Conception and directed her to build a Chapel on the site.
On the Feast of the Annunciation. The Lady gives her name: “I am The Immaculate Conception.”
In 1866, she became a Sister of Notre Dame at Nevers, and she remained there until she died at Nevers on April 16. Lourdes soon became one of the great pilgrimage centres of modern Christianity, attracting millions of visitors. Miracles were reported at the shrine and in the waters of the spring, and after painstaking investigation the apparitions were ecclesiastically approved. Bernadette was canonized in 1933 by Pope Pius XI.

ÁR GCÓINEARTÚ – JESSE TREE
All Confirmation candidates together with their parents / guardians are asked to take the front seats at one of this weekend’s three Parish Confirmation Programme Masses. We thank the Teachers and Children as they prepare and dress our 3 Advent Jesse Trees or the Family Tree of Jesus at these Masses.
Chorus: Rejoice, rejoice, O Israel
To you shall come Emmanuel (2)
A Jesse Tree Blessing
We ask God’s blessing on our Jesse tree, reminding us of our ancestors before Christ, the Son of David.
We read in sacred scripture:
Tá bachlóg ag eascar as bun chrann Ieise,
agus gas ag teacht óna fhréamh;
tá spiorad an Tiarna ag lonnú air., Íseáia 11:1-2.

Let us pray:
Heavenly Father, bless this tree, a reminder to us of your covenanted love, shown to your people, our ancestors, through the events of history in ancient times. May your son Christ, the shoot of Jesse, the true vine, invigorate us with his life and love, so that we may become his living branches in our world today. AMEN.
Chorus: Árdaigh do chroí, a Iosrael
Chughat tiocfaidh Emmanuel (2)
Confirmation candidates and their families are invited to use and prayerfully study together the copy of “Bible Alive for Kids” which is our Year of Faith special Parish gift to you as young parishioners preparing for your Confirmation.
Our next Confirmation Liturgy will take place on the 12th/13th of January 2013.

“Origin of Jesus Christ … and The Jesse Tree”
It is timely how eminent US Bible scholar Fr. Raymond E. Brown challenges all Christians to have a serious look “at the list of Jesus’ ancestors” he examines the good, the bad and the ugly of “the total generations from Abraham to David (14 generations); and from David to the Babylonian exile (14 more) and finally from the exile to the Christ (14 more). Matthew’s genealogy is telling us that the story of Jesus Christ contains as many sinners as saints and is written with the crooked lines of liars and betrayers and the immoral, and not only with straight lines… A God who did not hesitate to use the scheming as well as the noble, the impure as well as the pure, men to whom the world hearkened and women upon whom the world frowned – this God continues to work through the same melange. If it was a challenge to recognize in the last part of Matthew’s genealogy that totally unknown people were part of the story of Jesus Christ, it may be a greater challenge to recognize that the unknown characters of today are an essential part of the sequence… He has not hesitated to entrust the sequence of the story to a hierarchically structured church, guaranteed with promises, but not free from its own share of the corrupt, the venal, the stupid, and the ineffective. Those “Christians” who proclaim that they believe in and love Jesus but cannot accept the church or the institution because it is far from perfect and the story and consequently are not willing to face the challenge of the sequence.”
