May Altar in Your Home
We invite every home to set up a simple May Altar during Our Lady’s Month. All children of this year’s Confirmation and Do This in Memory programmes are invited to create a Sacred Space at home. This is a perfect setting for a May Altar by adding a statue / picture of Muire Máthair Dé and some fresh flowers / greenery from the field or garden.

Ár gCóineartú
Our Patron Saints / Laochra an Chreidimh No. 95. St. Brendan was born near Tralee, Co. Kerry in 484AD. He was baptised by Saint Erc. Saint Erc later ordained him a priest in 512AD. During the next twenty years he sailed around the islands surrounding Ireland spreading the word of God. He founded many monasteries. The most famous one is in Clonfert in Galway.
On his voyage to America he landed on an island which turned out to be a whale! He also saw volcanoes, sea monsters and icebergs on his travels. Story has it that he travelled to America many years before Columbus. St. Brendan died in 577 AD.
St. Brendan’s feast day is on the 16th of May. He is the patron saint of sailors. I chose St. Brendan because my dad’s name is Brendan and I like his voyages.
(Aaron – Scoil Eoin Baiste)

Rugadh Breandán sa bhlian 484 gar do Fhianait i gContae Chiarraí. Baisteadh é in aice le hArd Fhearta. ‘Sé Naomh Eírc a bhaisteadh é. Chuir Naomh Íde oideachas air nuair a bhí sé ag dul le sagartóireacht. Ba mhaith leis bádóireacht agus taisteal agus d’fhág sé Cuas a’ Bhodaigh aon lá amháin. Lean sé leis ó thuaidh go dtí go shroich sé Mericeá. Scríobhadh an leabhar Navigatio Sancti Brendani i ndiaidh seo faoi na heachtraí suimiúla ar fad a bhí aige agus é ag taisteal. Deirtear comh maith gur bhunaigh sé séipéilín Ghallarais ach níl eolas cruinn againn ar seo. Easpag ab ea é comh maith. Tá sé mar Naomh Phatrún Chiarraí agus tá Cnoc Bréanainn ainmithe in ómós dó. Tá mórán séipéil agus scoileanna timpeall na tíre tar éis a ainm a roghnú. ‘Sé an tainm ceart ar ‘an Sem’ i gCill Airne ná St. Brendan’s. Roghnaigh mé an tainm Breandán mar gurbh Ciarraíoch cailiúl ab ea é. Tá baint mór ag Ciarraí Thiar le Breandán agus is dóigh liom gurbh deas an ainm é.
(Jamie – Scoil an Ghleanna)

He is one of the most famous Irish Saints. The legend of a seven year voyage spread and crowds of pilgrims and students flocked to Ardfert. Religious houses were formed at Gallarus, Kilmalkedar, Brandon Hill and Inistooskert in the Blasket Islands in order to meet the wants of those who came for spiritual guidance from St. Brendan. St. Brendan is the patron Saint of sailors and travellers.
(Eddie – Scoil Iognáid Rís)

Saint Brendan the Navigator was born in Annagh outside Tralee, Co. Kerry around 484. When he grew up he became a monk and became a missionary voyager. He took many a voyage around Ireland and his most famous was to the New World – America. St. Brendan founded many monastic communities. The most famous monastery he founded was in Clonfert, Co. Galway in 577. St. Brendan died in Annaghdown at a monastic site he founded for his sister Bríg. His feast day is on the 16th of May and Mass is celebrated on the top of Mount Brandon each year. St. Brendan is the Patron Saint of sailors.
I chose the name Breandán because I liked the stories about his voyages. (Cian – Scoil Eoin Baiste)

All Welcome. Followed by Information session for those thinking about Priesthood. Contact Fr. Liam Lovell: liam.lovell@yahoo.ie / 087-1640967.
Priesthood is a call to be a spiritual father to the whole family of faith. Similarly, the consecrated life for a young woman is a call to be united to Christ in a unique way, and to be a spiritual mother to those she encounters in her life and service. The challenge for priests and religious is to be joyful models of their vocations.
“Today too, Jesus lives and walks along the paths of ordinary life in order to draw near to everyone … I turn now to those who are well disposed to listen to the voice of Christ that rings out in the Church and to understand what their own vocation is.” Pope Francis’ Message for World Day of Prayer for Vocations 2014.
