Laochra an Chreidimh II – Patrons
Rugadh Naomh Breandán i Trá Lí timpeall 484tc. Ón am go raibh sé bliain d-aois is iad an daoine i Mainistir Naomh Íta i gCo. Luimnigh a thug aire dó go dtí go raibh sé cúig bliana. Tháinig sé ar ais go Ciarraí le bheith ina shagart. Is i Ard Fhearta a bhunaigh Naomh Breandán a chéad Mainistir. Tá Ard Eaglais Naomh Breandán ansan inniú.
Dhein Breandán an soiscéal a scaipeadh agus chuala sé glaoch Dhia ag rá leis dul ar thuras. Chuaigh sé ar thuras le 14 daoine eile ag féachaint i gcomhair An Gháirdín Eden. Amach leo san Atlantach gan acu ach bád beag déanta as adhmad clúdaithe le craiceann bó. Thaispeáin sé seo go raibh Breandán cróga.
Tá alán daoine a deir gur shroich Naomh Breandán Meiriceá roimh do Christopher Columbus é a shroicint. D-éirigh le Breandán rudaí iontacha a dhéanamh mar gur éist sé le glaoch ó Dhia. Bhunaigh sé mainistir i Annaghdown agus cheann eile i gCluain Fearta agus fain sé ann ar feadh a shaol.
Fuair Naomh Breandán bás i 557TC. Bhí sé seachtó trí bliain d’aois. Tá sé adhlaic i Clonfert i gContae Gaillimh.
Tá mé ag piocadh an ainm seo mar tá uncail agam dárbh ainm Brendan agus is maith liom an t-ainm.

The Marriage Referendum
NB: Please take home and study The Meaning of Marriage Newsletter which is available in the Porch. Copies of Bishop Raymond de Brún’s Pastoral letter are also available. Further info on http://www.dioceseofkerry.ie and http://www.meaningofmarriage.ie
“The Bishops’ Conference, of which I am a member, has indicated it cannot support this amendment to the Constitution which redefines marriage. It is a time of intense debate. In some instances so intense that many are choosing not to engage. Convictions on both sides are deeply and passionately held. Those drawn to a “yes” vote speak of equality. Their convictions arise out of personal experience or because they know a family member or friend who is in a homosexual relationship. They feel a genuine compassion for people who are homosexual because they know the pain that homophobia can cause. They are rightly moved by reports of teenagers who struggle with sexual identity and have been bullied. Hearing about past experiences in society that inflicted injury on persons with a homosexual orientation, they sense that it is time to rebalance the scales of justice. Those unable to support a “yes” vote also include some people who themselves are homosexual and others who know a family member or friend who is in a homosexual relationship whom they cherish and love. For my own part, from listening to their experience, I recognise the importance of greater sensitivity to people with a homosexual orientation and the banishing of any homophobic attitudes. I want to see a supporting environment built for everyone in our society. But my and others’ concern on the ‘no’ side of this debate, has to do with how the proposed redefinition of marriage will impact on society as a whole, on family life that is already challenged, and in particular on children who have a right, except when this is not possible, to be raised by a mother and father. It is not easy to dialogue about these issues. But as the final days wind down to the referendum, let’s try all of us to remain respectful of each other’s view, listening to one another and, no matter what the outcome, be committed to building up a society that is good for families to be brought up in.
The forthcoming Referendum is also a call to Christians to rediscover the deep foundations of marriage based on the union of a man and a woman who are created to complement each other and, where possible, bring new life into the world. It is a call to Christian married couples to renew their witness to a life based on the sacrament of marriage.” (Bishop Brendan Leahy, Bishop of Limerick)
Go minic cuireann na daoine a lorgaíonn aitheantas dleathach do lánúineacha comhghnéiseacha a gcás i láthair mar bheart a bhaineann le cothromacht, le comhionannas agus le cearta sibhialta.
Dearbhaíonn an Eaglais gur cóir cearta sibhialta bunúsacha a thabhairt do gach duine. Ach, ní éilíonn san go scriosfaí bunchloch an teaghlaigh atá bunaithe ar phósadh agus ar an dteaghlach. Ní féidir dúinn tacú le leasú ar an mbunracht a dhéanfaidh sainmhiniú an phósta fé mar a thuigimid é, a athrú agus a chuireann aontas idir bheirt fhear nó beir bhan ar chomhchéim le caidreamh pósta idir fear agus bean, agus an comhdhlús sin a bhaineann le giniúint agus saolú linbh.
