Smaoineamh
When all is said and done, it wasn’t the manna that sustained the Israelites during their time in the desert. What sustained them was their faith and trust in God. The same ‘food’ is available to us. Faith and trust in God will nourish us at all times but especially during times of trial. It’s not we who keep the faith that keeps us. No matter how difficult life may be, for those who trust in God, and live a day at a time, the manna falls every day.

Smaoineamh
The miracle of Jesus should make us thankful to God for the food we have, and careful not to waste it. The miracle of the multiplication of the loaves is a miracle of generosity. We experience that generosity every time we sit down to eat and especially when we receive the Eucharist. The experience of generosity should result in an enlarging of our hearts, and a desire to be generous towards those who are not as fortunate as ourselves.

Lord, look upon us and take pity on us,
For at times we too are like sheep.
Save us from a blind following of the herd.
Help us to listen to your voice,
to trust you and to follow you,
even if it means leaving the crowd
and walking a lonely path.
Lead us from fear to trust,
from error to truth,
From hate to love, from war to peace,
From despair to hope,
and from death to life. Amen.

Smaoineamh

Jesus was no detached healer. He showed care and compassion for those who suffered. And he wasn’t afraid to let the sufferers know that he cared about them. There is a fine example of this in today’s Gospel. On stepping ashore, he was met by a large crowd. But he didn’t see them as a crowd with problems and worries. He had compassion on them, precisely because they were wounded and in need.

The word of God is to the human heart
What a seed is to the earth.
However, just as a seed needs soil,
So the word needs a receptive heart.
The earth responds to the rain and sun
So that even the desert blooms.
But the arid human heart has the power to resist
So that it remains barren.
Lord, soften our hearts with your grace,
Open them with your gentle love,
So that the precious seed of your word
May take root in our hearts,
And bear fruit in our lives.

God’s word comforts, guides, inspires and challenges us in turn. It is like precious seed. The sower sowed the seed haphazardly: on the path, on the rocks, among the thorns, and on good ground. He was extremely generous with the seed. He wanted to give every part of the field a chance to produce something. God keeps on sowing his word in our hearts. The seed of God’s word, once dropped into the human heart, never dies. It’s never too late to act on the Word of God.

A biblical prophet is someone who has received a divine call to speak God’s word to his people. Even though the Word of God could be a hard word, it was a word of love because it meant that God had not abandoned his people. God’s spokesman had to be prepared for opposition and rejection. It was so for the Old Testament prophets, and for Jesus himself. At the close of his Galilean ministry Jesus is rejected by the people of his home town, who can’t bring themselves to believe in the greatness of someone who is one of themselves. Consequently, his power is ineffective there. Their rejection of him is an anticipation of his rejection by the Jewish nation as a whole.

Family Prayer for World Meeting of Families
God, our Father, we are brothers and sisters in Jesus
your Son, one family, in the Spirit of your love.
Bless us with the joy of love.
Make us patient and kind, gentle and generous,
welcoming to those in need.
Help us to live your forgiveness and peace.
Protect all families with your loving care, especially those for whom we now pray:
[We pause and remember family members and others by name].
Increase our faith, strengthen our hope, keep us safe in your love.
Make us always grateful for the gift of life that
This we ask, through Christ our Lord. Amen.

Smaoineamh

One of the nicest things in life is to meet an open, friendly, warm, hospitable person. Hospitality is a hallmark of a true follower of Christ. Christ calls us to welcome the strangers in our midst. To be hospitable does not mean making them like us. It means accepting them as they are. This enables them to shed their strangeness, and become members of the community. To open one’s heart is to begin to live. To close it is to begin to die.

Smaoineamh

Every place needs Christian witnesses. Christ says, ‘Witness to me before men’. It’s in the world we have to stand up and be counted. It’s not good enough to be secret disciples of Christ. We have to give public witness to our Christian faith. What we are likely to face is not so much hostility or opposition, but something which is even harder – a deadly indifference. To witness in this case requires a special kind of courage. It means overcoming our fear of what people will think of us or say about us, and the fear of what it will cost us in terms of letting go of our ego.

The word of God is to the human heart
what a seed is to the earth
However, just as the seed needs soil,
so the word needs a receptive heart.
The earth responds to the rain and sun
so that even the desert blooms.
But the arid human heart has the power to resist
so that it remains barren.
Lord, soften our hearts with your grace,
open them with your gentle love,
so that the precious seed of your word
may take root in our hearts,
and bear fruit in our lives.

Smaoineamh

In Jesus’ story the farmer did his part – he sowed the seed. Things were now beyond his control. The one thing he wanted to see happen, namely, for the seed to grow, he couldn’t do anything about. All he could do was wait in patience, humility and hope. These are not easy virtues. Yet life calls for these virtues. Some people think they must always be up and doing – as if everything depended on them. They are unable to take time out, to let things be, to trust, to be patient, to be humble, to wait.

Smaoineamh

Sin divides each of us in two: part of us is pulling with God, and part of us is pulling against God. Sin is not something we can throw off once and for all like an old garment. Rather, it is a condition in which we live. What is important is not so much our failures as our struggle for goodness. Once we are seriously struggling for goodness, we are facing in the right direction, and we are on the side of Christ. By the grace of God, the divided self can be made whole.

Kerry diocese helping finance WMF 2018
The final collection to help finance the World Meeting of Families will be taken up at all Masses next weekend Saturday/Sunday June 16th/17th. I thank you for your generous contribution to the previous collections.
I ask you to consider being especially generous to this collection. With the visit of Pope Francis and the need to plan to accommodate over half a million at the final Mass (hopefully huge numbers from our diocese will be present), costs are enormous. A figure of twenty million Euro is being mentioned. It is vital that each diocese makes a significant contribution.
You can donate via the Masses on that weekend or you might consider putting your contribution in an envelope and marking it WMF 2018and bringing it with you to church any weekend. This collection deserves a special effort on all our parts.
In hosting WMF 2018 Ireland is doing a great service for the whole Church and the world, reminding us all in the words of Pope Saint John Paul:
“The future of humanity passes by way of marriage and the family”.
