The Way of the Cross leads to God

He carried the cross to Calvary,
Carried its burden for you and me,
There on the cross He was crucified
And, because He suffered and bled and died,
We know that whatever “our cross” may be,
It leads to God and Eternity . . . .

For who can hope for a “crown of stars”
Unless it is earned with suffering and scars,
For how could we face the living Lord
And rightfully claim His promised reward,
If we have not carried our cross of care
And tasted the cup of bitter despair . . . .

Let those who yearn for the pleasures of life,
And long to escape all suffering and strife,
Rush recklessly on to an “empty goal”
With never a thought of the spirit and soul . . . .
But if you are searching to find the way
To life everlasting and eternal day –
With Faith in your heart take the path He trod,
For the way of the cross is the way to God.

Smaoineamh
Jesus illuminated a dark scene with the radiance of his compassion. There is a marvellous lesson here for us. It’s easy to condemn others. We must learn from the example of Jesus not to condemn. The very act of condemning another involves a sin. There surely is a time to correct another. But there is an art in doing so. It consists in being totally kind and totally honest at the same time. We must look to ourselves. We must be willing to extend to others the same compassion we would like to receive.

Loving God,
As a mother gives life and
nourishment to her children,
So you watch over your church.
Bless these women,
that they may be strengthened
as Christian mothers.
Let the example of their faith and
love shine forth.
Grant that we, their sons and daughters
may honour them always
with a spirit of profound respect.
Grant this through Christ our Lord.

Mother’s Day Sunday 31ú Márta
We wish God’s blessing on all mothers today and thank God
for their love and care, especially to their families.
Smaoineamh
It’s easy to come back home when you’re a hero laden with trophies and glory. But the prodigal son had no trophies to show his father, no achievements with which to earn his praise , his welcome, and his love.
The biggest discovery the younger son made was that he was loved in his sins. The father never stopped loving him. It doesn’t do one much good to be loved in one’s goodness. But it is an extraordinary experience to be loved in one’s sinfulness.

Smaoineamh
Christians rarely ask themselves the question: What have I failed to do? The call to repentace is not merely a call to turn away from evil, but a call to ‘produce the fruits’ of good living. That is why it is relevant for everybody.
Jesus’ call to repentance disturbs us, and we don’t like to be disturbed. We want out quiet life, a life which may contain a lot of selfishness. We may not be guilty of great evil, yet we could be very selfish, very demanding, very inconsiderate. But we don’t want to know, much less do anything, about this side of our nature. We are being called from being self-centred, to become other-centred and God-centred.

Smaoineamh
St Patrick was born in 387 CE and grew up near the present day border between Scotland and England. He was taken to Ireland as a slave when he was 16. He fled back to Great Britian after six year before returning to Ireland as a missionary later in his life. He played an important role in converting Ireland’s inhabitants to Christianity. According to legend, he drove all snakes from the island, although these “snakes” probably represent a particular group of pagans or druids.
Many Christians believe that Patrick died on March 17th in the year 461 or 493. He is buried under Down Cathedral in Downpartick, Co. Down. He was never formally canonized but many Christian Churches view him as a saint.

Lent is a time to learn to travel light,
to clear the clutter
from our crowded lives,
and find a space,
a desert.

deserts are bleak:
no creature comforts,
only a vast expanse of
stillness, sharpening awareness of
ourselves and
God.

Smaoineamh
We need a lonely place for reflection. Often we live foolishly and unspiritually, driven on by stupid desires and imprisoned by selfish habits. We are surrounded by noise and constant activity. We need solitude. In solitude we begin to stand on our own feet before God and the world, and accept full responsibility for our own lives. The hermit goes into the desert, not to lose himself, but to find himself. Only in solitude and silence can I find the gentleness with which I can love my brothers and sisters.

Celebrating Lent
The diocese has created two resources to guide people through Lent: Journeying through Lent is a prayer booklet inviting people to pray daily, asking God for a particular gift this Lent e.g. becoming people of compassion. ‘Opening Our Hearts – A Lenten journey for families’ offers families a way to gather each week using one of two proposed prayer activities. Copies of both the Prayer booklet and Opening Our Hearts leaflet are available at the back of the 3 Parish Churche or you can find them on http://www.dioceseofkerry.ie

O Sower of Seeds,
You saw the potential
and beauty within me
and hidden from my eyes.

Thanks and praise to you
O Sower to Seeds,
I am lost in surprise
as I am greening and growing

Accept my praise,
my thankfulness too,
for the seed you have sown
and the gift that you grew.

May you lead me to others
who await your good word,
so the seeds within them
can awake and be heard.

Smaoineamh
It’s easy to see the rotten fruit on another person’s tree. But Jesus asks us to look at the kind of fruit our own tree is producing. If there is good fruit there, it doesn’t mean we can be complacent. The fact that we do some good things, doesn’t make us thoroughly good people. And if we find some bad fruit on our trees, we shouldn’t let it get us down. It doesn’t mean we are bad through and through. Let us extend to others the same kind of understanding.
Pray for Seán Moran, Ballintaggart; Denis Galvin, Aglish; Siobhán Lynch, Ballyguin; Pádraig Ó Conchubhair, An Seana Ché, Baile na nGall. Suaimhneas síoraí dá n-anamacha.

Celebrating Lent
The diocese has created two resources to guide people through Lent: Journeying through Lent is a prayer booklet inviting people to pray daily, asking God for a particular gift this Lent e.g. becoming people of compassion, and opening our Hearts offers families a way to gather each week using one of two proposed prayer activities. Pick them up at Mass or find them on http://www.dioceseofkerry.ie

God’s call unfolds, a word at a time, slowly.
A disciple is not made in a hurry.
Slowly, I become like the one
to whom I am listening.

Life unfolds, a petal at a time, like us,
becoming followers of Jesus,
discipled into a new way of living
deeply and slowly.

Be patient with life’s unfolding petals.
If you hurry the bud, it withers.
If you hurry life, it limps.

Each unfolding is a teaching,
a movement of grace,
filled with silent pauses,
breathtaking beauty, tears and heartaches.

Life unfolds, a petal at a time, deeply and slowly.

Smaoineamh
Love releases extraordinary energies in us. The power of love is greater than the power of evil. Still, one of the most difficult things in the world is to love someone who hates you. Yet true love is love of the difficult and the unlovable. Mercy is stronger and more God-like than vengeance.
It is a struggle to overcome the feelings of bitterness and revenge that well up inside us, and can keep welling up, when we are badly treated by another. Forgiveness is never easy. Each day it must be struggled for, and prayed for.

Kerry Person of the Year
Congratulations to Tomás Garvey who has been selected by the Kerry Association in Dublin as their Kerry person of the year. Le gach dea-ghuí ón bparóiste.

Smaoineamh
We often stick with the old and what seems safe and reliable. This is good and important on occasions but it is also good to try new things in life. Our outlook in life changes as time passes. Every day we adapt to changes all around us. Life moulds us and shapes us. What was once important to us, may now no longer be so. Our Gospels encourage us to be open to life and especially all that is refreshing and life giving in our own lives. To be open to what’s new can be risky but always challenging, fufilling and a great place to be.
